Treat Your Gout with this 6 Relief Suggestions
November 30, 2008
The most common symptom of gout, which afflicts about three-quarters of gout sufferers, is excruciating pain in the joint at the base of the big toe. However, joints in other parts of the body including the feet, hands, wrists, knees, shoulders, and elbows are fair game for gout attacks. Joints can become so swollen and inflamed that the patient develops a fever and chills.
Gout comes on very suddenly, produces severe pain, and usually lasts three to five days if untreated. However, flare-ups frequently recur and last even longer.
There are several conditions that can result in gout, but the primary cause is an abnormally high level of uric acid in the blood, either from the body’s producing too much or from the body’s not excreting it properly. Gout is more common in men than in women, possibly because the female body eliminates uric acid more efficiently. The disease often strikes middle-aged males, especially men who are overweight and drink too much alcohol. But healthy people can develop gout, too. For instance, allowing yourself to become severely dehydrated may trigger an attack.
Although gout produces brutal pain, it is rarely life-threatening. However, the condition requires proper diagnosis and treatment by a doctor, who can rule out other causes of joint pain and prescribe effective medications. Once you’ve seen your physician, however, there are a few things you should do on your own.
1. Don’t put any weight on the joint. This usually means staying off your feet as much as possible until the episode subsides. Any pressure you put on the joint will increase the pain and possibly damage the area further.
2. Keep the joint elevated. Let gravity help reduce inflammation by slowing the rush of blood to the gout inflicted joint.
3. Immobilize the joint. The less you move the joint, the better it will feel. Simply lying still will help, though you may want to build a splint for the injured joint. Ask your doctor how, or consult a first-aid guide.
4. Take a nonprescription anti-inflammatory. Inflammation causes swelling, which worsens pain. Both ibuprofen and aspirin are anti-inflammatories, but when taken at low levels, aspirin may actually make the pain worse, so reach for the ibuprofen when treating gout.
5. Avoid icing or heating the area. Unlike other types of pain, gout doesn’t respond well to heat or ice therapy.
6. Wear comfortable shoes. For gout sufferers, styles that offer a lot of room for the toes are the best choice.

Want to Know About Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)? Read This…
STDs are more than just an embarrassment. They’re a serious health problem. If untreated, some STDs can cause permanent damage, such as infertility (the inability to have a baby) and even death (in the case of HIV/AIDS).
How STDs Spread
One reason STDs spread is because people think they need to have sexual intercourse to become infected. That’s wrong. A person can get some STDs, like herpes or genital warts, through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area or sore. Another myth about STDs is that you can’t get them if you have oral or anal sex. That’s also wrong because the viruses or bacteria that cause STDs can enter the body through tiny cuts or tears in the mouth and anus, as well as the genitals.
STDs also spread easily because you can’t tell whether someone has an infection. In fact, some people with STDs don’t even know that they have them. These people are in danger of passing an infection on to their sex partners without even realizing it.
Some of the things that increase a person’s chances of getting an STD are:
- Sexual activity at a young age. The younger a person starts having sex, the greater his or her chances of becoming infected with an STD.
- Lots of sex partners. People who have sexual contact — not just intercourse, but any form of intimate activity — with many different partners are more at risk than those who stay with the same partner.
- Unprotected sex. Latex condoms are the only form of birth control that reduce your risk of getting an STD. Spermicides, diaphragms, and other birth control methods may help prevent pregnancy, but they don’t protect a person against STDs.
Preventing and Treating STDs
As with many other diseases, prevention is key. It’s much easier to prevent STDs than to treat them. The only way to completely prevent STDs is to abstain from all types of sexual contact. If someone is going to have sex, the best way to reduce the chance of getting an STD is by using a condom.
People who are considering having sex should get regular gynecological or male genital examinations. There are two reasons for this. First, these exams give doctors a chance to teach people about STDs and protecting themselves. And second, regular exams give doctors more opportunities to check for STDs while they’re still in their earliest, most treatable stage.
In order for these exams and visits to the doctor to be helpful, people need to tell their doctors if they are thinking about having sex or if they have already started having sex. This is true for all types of sex — oral, vaginal, and anal.
Don’t let embarrassment at the thought of having an STD keep you from seeking medical attention. Waiting to see a doctor may allow a disease to progress and cause more damage. If you think you may have an STD, or if you have had a partner who may have an STD, you should see a doctor right away.
If you don’t have a doctor or prefer not to see your family doctor, you may be able to find a local clinic in your area where you can get an exam confidentially. Some national and local organizations operate STD hotlines staffed by trained specialists who can answer your questions and provide referrals. Calls to these hotlines are confidential. One hotline you can call for information is the National STD Hotline at 1-800-227-8922.
Not all infections in the genitals are caused by STDs. Sometimes people can get symptoms that seem very like those of STDs, even though they’ve never had sex. For girls, a yeast infection can easily be confused with an STD. Guys may worry about bumps on the penis that turn out to be pimples or irritated hair follicles. That’s why it’s important to see a doctor if you ever have questions about your sexual health.
These Rugs Deserve a Second Look
My wife and I consider the cleanliness of our home as one of our priorities in keeping it an ideal place for us and our children. I get used to placing some rugs in some areas in our house to see to it that everything is neat and tidy. Before, I used to consider rugs as mere cleaning tools, so much so that after using them they are just placed anywhere in the house. I do not even bother to give a second look over them once I see them occupy some areas in the bath room, dining room or the living room. Rugs, for me, are nothing but dirt entrapments.
That was before. My stereotypical perception of rugs has entirely changed when I get to see the variety of rugs at superiorrugs.com. Let’s Talk About “Indigestion”
What Is Indigestion?
Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia (pronounced: dis-pep-see-ah), is just another name for an upset stomach. Indigestion usually happens when people eat too much or too fast or certain foods don’t agree with them. It might happen more often if you smoke, drink alcohol, are stressed out, or don’t get enough sleep.
Sometimes indigestion can be accompanied by heartburn. Despite its name though, heartburn actually has nothing to do with your heart. It’s caused by stomach acid splashing up from the stomach and into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This is sometimes called acid indigestion, and it usually leaves a sour or bitter taste in the mouth.
Indigestion and heartburn are common problems for people of all ages — hence all those commercials for heartburn and indigestion medicines on TV. Some of the medicines you see advertised are OK for teens, but some of them are meant for adults. So before you start taking any medication for heartburn or indigestion, talk to your doctor.
What Causes Indigestion?
You may be wondering how indigestion occurs in the first place. There are many potential causes — often it’s just because a person eats too much or eats too fast, as mentioned before. But sometimes it can be due to smoking, drinking alcohol, or certain stomach problems, like gastritis (stomach inflammation) or an ulcer.
Do I Have It?
If you have indigestion, you’ll probably have one or more of the following symptoms:
* Pain or burning in your upper belly
* Nausea
* Bloating
* Uncontrollable burping
* Heartburn
When to Go to the Doctor
Usually, indigestion only happens once in a while, like after eating certain foods that don’t agree with you. But you’ll want to see the doctor if you get indigestion even when you’re eating healthy foods, exercising, and getting enough sleep.
You may need to be examined or have stomach X-rays or other tests to make sure your indigestion is not a sign of another problem in your digestive tract. Depending on what the doctor finds, you might need to make changes in your diet or take medicine.
Be sure to tell your parent or talk to a doctor if these things happen in addition to your indigestion:
* Vomiting (throwing up), especially if you see blood in your vomit
* Weight loss
* No appetite for more than a day
* Shortness of breath
* Frequent or intense stomach pain
* Black or bloody bowel movements
These can be signs of other problems, so be sure to talk to a doctor if you experience one or several of these symptoms.
Indigestion Prevention
Some people can eat anything and never get an upset stomach. But others are more sensitive to certain foods and find that some just don’t agree with them. If you discover you have a problem with particular foods, it’s best to limit them or skip them entirely.
In addition to avoiding problem foods, try to eat a few smaller meals instead of one or two really big ones. Here are some other tips to prevent indigestion:
* As much as possible, avoid fatty, greasy foods, like fries and burgers.
* Avoid too much chocolate or too many citrus fruits (the acid in citrus fruits can upset the digestive tract.
* Eat slowly.
* Don’t smoke.
* Find ways to relax and decrease stress.
* Give your body a chance to digest food. Don’t eat a huge meal and immediately go to sports practice. Try to eat at least an hour before physical exertion, or eat afterwards.
You might still get indigestion once in a while, even if you follow these tips. But as long as your indigestion doesn’t go on for a long time or is not excessively painful, it’s probably nothing out of the ordinary.
Jim Piccolo: As He Was Destined to Success
November 7, 2008
Hard work, perseverance, ability and faith—-all those indispensable virtues completely rolled into one are found in this admirable visionary of our time. He has trodden the street to find his place under the sun. He ventured on various fields to search his destiny. Now he is an heir of a long sought end called success. Jim Piccolo is the paragon of the American Dream. His success tells us of innumerable stories of struggles and trials, of inspiration and desperation, of ups and downs. But as the old maxim will tells us “Nothing and no one can put a good man down.” This maxim speaks of truth a thousand fold than any other political speech ever delivered.
Mr. Jim Piccolo, the Chairman of Nouveau Riche University since 2005 and the owner of the University, has inspired millions of people all over the world of his sweet struggles and bitter triumphs in life. He had passed several trials that put his patience and mettle to test, but he never gave up. He proved to himself that a failure is just one thing, rising up and learning from such failure is another but more important thing. I, myself, got inspired with the magnitude of his accomplishments. His life speaks of greatness, excellence and discipline. Being able to drive one’s self to the eye of a needle is something, but being able to surpass one’s circumstances in life in order to reach a transcendental level is truly an attainment that only a few souls can do. And Jim Piccolo is one of these few good souls.
How I certainly wish I can reach that great end called success as has been reached by the likes of Jim Piccolo!
